Weekend In Kampala

06-07 July 2012

I realize that my goal with this blog was to highlight the good things that we were doing here in Africa, but lately I have not been taking many pictures except on weekends

On Friday 06 July, a few of us went to Kampala to have a cultural experience, seeing what the night life was like here and staying in a hostel.

After meeting some Ugandan friends at a Chinese restaurant, we checked in to the hostel around 12:30am (I was sure we were going to just call it a night and go to bed) Everyone decided to go dancing at clubs. So we did. It was funny how many people asked how much we had been drinking. (We tend to let our hair down on the dance floor)

You can find me at the club

Other Club
The other club we went to was a little bit more fun. Less rich foreigners and more college age people.

This local girl named Emily was drunk off her rocker. She made it a point to dance awkwardly with just about everyone on the dance floor. Here is Emily dropping it low with Melissa.

Melissa and Emily (who probably woke up the next morning and had no recollection of the night's dancing madness.

Back at the hostel

We made it back to the hostel a little after 4:30am. Everyone was asleep there except some Polish guy who had had one too many vodkas. He was staggering around and mumbling things no one understood.

As I walked to the bathroom to brush my teeth before going to bed, I rounded the corner and saw a scene so funny that I had to take a picture. (seen below)

At around 10:30 in the morning, loud voices in the dorm/hostel woke me. The Polish guys were all interrogating their friend about his night. His story went something like this, "I don't know what happened last night. I woke up a few minutes ago in a Land Rover. Someone put me in a Land Rover, and I don't know where my shirt

07  July 2012

The U.S. Embassy/State Dept. hosted a party to celebrate the 4th of July in Kampala on Saturday night. It was awesome to have a hamburger, bbq chicken, and sweet corn on the cob.

Here's where most of the party happened. Food and entertainment and fireworks at night time. After the party, the young adults stayed around for a dance party. Pay special attention to the dance floor on the left (above) to better understand the stories/blog post that follows this one.

The After-Party Dance Party

For the second night in a row, we danced. This time, all of our Help International volunteers were present. Other young adults who work here with the USAID and other NGO etc. Were also there dancing. Since we dance a lot in our house in Lugazi, we have a lot of inter-group chemistry and coordination. Some people asked us if we were a professional dance group in Uganda.

Funny story: Later in the dance party, a guy who was talking with Chelsea, used his beer to point at me me getting down on the dance floor and asked "how many has that guy had tonight?" Chelsea laughed and responded "I'm pretty sure he's never had a drink in his life"

We all got a bit crazy that night. It was very fun. Too fun even...... stay tuned for the next post to find out why.........................
