In earlier posts (from 21 May) I talked about our visit to the Seya School. The people in that village have shown us they are very serious about building a new school for their kids. Many people in attendance volunteered time and bricks to help with the project. Often times people just want free gifts but these people are really serious and willing to work/sacrifice.
On 02 and 03 June, we began digging the footings for the foundation of their school. While we dug, the school children would take a trek 1/3 of a mile up the canyon to carry rocks back to put in the ditches for the footings. Everyone was working. Imagine if back in America kids had to help build their own school. Then imagine if they only got a cup of porridge for lunch.
On a side note, it is interesting that many kids cannot even afford the porridge for lunch. We have program we call "Happy Child" where we go to schools and play with the kids who cannot afford lunch. Basically, we try to distract them so they do not think about being hungry when their other classmates are eating lunch (porridge).
Getting started. We had a few short shovels and hoes.
Liz, Lane and Elaine diggin' it
Digging in the clay
Ready for concrete. One bag at a time. Should be big fun.
